4 galleriesWhat is the Spanish Dream? Well it depends on who you ask. For North Americans it is often related to romanticized views created by authors, painters, political heroes and ideal vacations. Living this dream only started to become a reality in the last 37 years. The oppressive government of Franco and high level of poverty made it a place to dream about, maybe visit but not to live. The growth of a new democracy starting in 1975, the Olympic games in Barcelona in 1992 and the entrance into the European Union in 2000 increased the popularity of Spain with international tourist. Cities like Barcelona, Seville and Madrid started to see a growth in the number of foreigners not only visiting but also coming to live. This photographic report takes a close look at several North Americans living in Barcelona and examines their Spanish Dream.

20 imagesThis series of photographs follows the long journey from Ethiopia's capital city Addis Ababa to the Omo River Valley in the southwest on the borders of Kenya and Sudan. Addis Ababa is busy with traffic, construction and a mix of all of Ethiopia's ethnic groups quite often living on top of each other in shanty towns. Heading south the landscape changes to smaller towns, less infrastructure, and areas of distinctive groups that define the different regions. After passing city's like Awassa or Arba Minch the road turns to dirt and small towns are simply meeting places for tribal groups to sell and buy needed goods. The Omo River Valley is a harsh landscape of seasonal floods and droughts. Famine is not uncommon and this area is often a focal point of international aid. Government efforts have been made to develop this region but governments change and projects are abandoned.

15 imagesJacinto Elá Ayana Eyene was born in Añisok, Equatoguinean but moved to Spain as a baby. As an adolescent his mother encouraged him to play football to keep him out of the streets. Quickly he became a star player and at the age of 14 he won the Most Valuable Player in the Nike Premium Cup, which came with a 3 year Nike product contract. Jacinto went on to play with Southampton, Dundee F.C., and UDA Gramenet. In 2010 Jacinto retired at the age of 28. Football had been good to him, allowing him to buy a house for his mother, but he felt there was more to life and he needed a change. Many of his friends thought he should have continued to play, even if it was in second division, but he said it had stopped being fun and was too much of a business. Since then Jacinto has made a lot of changes in his life including starting a business with his girlfriend Esther, becoming a teacher's aid, and moving into an apartment with Esther. Football still plays an important role in his life but now it is just for fun. The way he likes it.

Although the majority of the activities of the strike were non-violent, some areas of Barcelona experienced violent clashes between police and protestors which turned into riots. It was hard to tell which which created more chaos, excessive force used by the police or destruction of property done by a few in the crowd, but the end results were multiple injuries, burning garbage containers, smashed and burned out shops and quite a few arrest .
